UVG CitiStars
Epsom Buses had used a number of Mercedes-Benz 709D midibuses
with Beaver bodywork from the late eighties,
on a mix of commercial and tendered routes.
Now, almost ten years on in 1997, a further round of small buses was needed.
Epsom Buses bought three Varios with UVG CitiStar bodywork for use on TfL's S4
(Sutton - Belmont - Wallington - Roundshaw).
These fairly ugly midibuses were in company cream with maroon skirts.
Epsom Buses then took over some MetroRiders from London General with the S1 and 413, but was also moving towards Dart SLFs for small bus work.
The Citistars survived about five years on Epsom small bus work, before sale for further work elsewhere.
Plaxton Beaver2s
In 1998 Epsom Buses bought four 7.8m Beaver2s for back-road routes K9 and K10
(Epsom - Worcester Park - Kingston),
supported by Surrey County Council (those were the days!).
Another arrived in December for the 404 (Coulsdon - Old Coulsdon - Caterham-on-the-Hill)
Actually they were not the first: a new one had been hired in October,
presumably to train the staff before the needed ones arrived.
They stayed put until August 2005, when new Darts on the S3 displaced the older Alexander-bodied incumbents onto the "country" routes, including the K9 and K10. Four were then sold, leaving MB16 as a spare for a while longer. MB17 and 19 went to Z&S at Aylesbury.
