The 399 was introduced in June 1965 as another attempt to tap the potential of the Dartford Tunnel,
It had been expected that the populations of Grays and Romford would welcome the opportunity
to visit vibrant Dartford, (and vice-versa). But GreenLine 722 did not prosper,
and neither did RT-operated route 300. A GS was allocated to Grays to operate through the tunnel just between Grays and Dartford.
This too did not prosper, and was quickly withdrawn.
Preserved GS15 at Lingfield Show in August 2000 wears 399 blinds on the front.GS28 was drafted into Grays to start the route in June 1965, but was whisked off in July for its overhaul at Aldenham. Its place was taken by GS21, fresh from overhaul. December 1965 saw GS36 arrive too. These two GSs remained at Grays until the spring of 1967, the route being withdrawn in May.
