365 SA St Albans - Sandridge - Wheathamstead - East Hyde- Luton

365 map

In January 1965 GS54 was made redundant at Harlow, and was transferred to St.Albans, where it spent a couple of years working on some lightly-trafficked routes, mainly the 382, but with some forays on the 365. GS21 took over in April 1967 and worked through until October that year, when one of the now-surplus RFs took over.

The 365 was a back-lane route between St.Albans and Luton. It was an RF route in the fifties and sixties, having earlier been worked by Q's and TFs from St.Albans garage.

The main drag was the 321 through Harpenden, but the 365 was an altogether quieter affair. From St.Albans station the route passed the superb - and much-lamented - bus station, and kept company with the 304 and 355 out along the Hitchin road to Wheathampstead. There the 365 and 355 turned left along the Lea Valley, receiving company in the shape of Rail Replacement service 366 from Welwyn Garden City. The Upper Lea Valley road - a quiet B-road - passed through several villages. The 355 terminated at Batsford, on the northern fringes of Harpenden, and the "slow" 365 and limited stop 366 continued up the increasingly rural valley beyond Coldharbour, through East Hyde and New Mill End. Keeping the river and the Midland Main Line Railway company the route skirted past Luton Hoo Park, and into Luton. There it was unable to accept further passengers on its way in to town, as Luton was municipal bus territory.
